PRAKTIK METROPOL MADRID
Update January 2015:
Most striking feature:
The location. If you want to stay right in the middle of Madrid, this is where you should go. The famous shopping streets are in front of your room (the Gran Via and the Calle de Fuencarral with all of the Spanish high street chains) and the best areas of the city are all on walking distance. I’m a huge fan of the Praktik Rambla in Barcelona and this Praktik is the newest one (opened in 2011). It was on my wish list for ages – partly because I saw the pictures of the scented candles in the bathroom (only for the press pictures unfortunately haha).
Next to the McDonald’s you’ll walk into a chic building where you’ll find several hostels and the Praktik hotel. Staff is very helpful and tells me that I can take a coffee and a donut for 1 euro if I like. The lobby is on the first floor and on the fauteuils you can do some people watching of the square in front of you. There’s a long wooden table with local magazines on it. And two computer you can use. Ofcourse there’s free wifi.
My room is on the upper floor. A big door opens the world of Praktik: simple yet very practical. The room is mainly white with a dark wooden floor. On the walls you’ll find like 30 buttons you can use to hang your clothes on. But there’s also a huge cupboard. With a large mirror. The bed is definitely king size (especially for someone measuring 1.67 meters). The main selling point of this room is the balcony. With a superb view over the city. So take a bottle of wine upstairs and drink it before going to bed in the night heat of Madrid. There’s also a rooftop terrace for all of the guests. It’s perfectly located. You can see the whole of Madrid stretching in front of you.
Update January 2015: This time I stayed in the Gran Via Corner Suite and it was a dream coming true! This room is smaller than my room at the upper floor, but once you open the door your jaw drops immediately. You sleep in the middle of a oriel made entirely of glass. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway with your love then this is the room to book!
I would highly recommend the Praktik Metropol to people who don’t want to spend lots of euros on their hotel room but still want to stay fresh & clean in a minimalistic design environment. When you stay in the middle of Madrid there has to be one tiny downfall. The busy square is also the workplace of Madrid hookers and that attracts a certain kind of men (update January 2015: in the last couple of years they worked on that so I noticed few of them during my recent trip). Watch your belongings, stay in the hotel or quickly walk to the spots I’m gonna describe later this week.
