The question I’m asked most often is: ‘what are your absolute favorites?’ That’s a tough question because everything on my site is a favorite, otherwise I won’t write about it. But if I have to narrow them down to a shortlist of the best addresses, so you can print it out and take it with you, you have found the right page. Here you go: my favorites, all Tried & Tested, in Amsterdam! Enjoy!

Welcomes:  budget design travellers who have a thing for fashion
Loves: to invite upcoming fashion designers to decorate the rooms
PP-tip: stay in the Crinoline Cage and sleep underneath, or in, a dress.
Your tip:

Hotel Modern
Area: Amsterdam-Noord, Meidoornweg 2, 020-4940684, www.modernamsterdam.nl
Welcomes: travellers who aren’t afraid to cross the IJ and leave the center behind.
Loves: to do silly things. Write the lyrics of Jay-z’s ’99 problems’ on a door for example.
PP-tip: take your bath gel and soak in the big tub while reading ‘La Parisienne’.
Your tip:  

EAT 

Bar Moustache 
Area: Center, Utrechtsestraat 141, 020-4281074, www.barmoustache.nl
Welcomes: people shopping and strolling through the Utrechtsestraat – one of Amsterdam’s best streets in my opinion (oh, and also that of Marc Jacobs who is gonna open his first Amsterdam boutique here).
Loves: moustaches. And cake. And thick club sandwiches. And tea with magazines.
PP-tip: a cafe with the latest, updated, magazines. What’s not to love?
Your tip:

Lion Noir 
Area: Center, Reguliersdwarsstraat 28, 020-6276603, www.lionnoir.nl  
Welcomes: you into a dim light environment where owner Casper Reinders exhibits it’s rare, usually at flea market bought, finds.
Love: to serve you a delicious dinner upstairs.
PP-tip: there’s a secret garden behind the restaurant. Go there on a sunny afternoon.

Rosa & Rita
Area: Oostelijke Eilanden, Conradstraat 471, 020-06-11122373, www.rosaenrita.nl
Welcomes: you with steak or pizza.
Loves: to serve you on their outside terrace when the weather is fine.
PP-tip: Try their mozzarella pizza for 11 euro. Delicious!
Your tip:

Mazzo 
Area: Jordaan, Rozengracht 114, 020-3446402, www.mazzoamsterdam.nl  
Welcomes: you in their Italian shed with a fingerlickin’ interior.
Loves: to bake pizza’s.
PP-tip: go here on a first date. Recipe for luck. I’m still together with my boyfriend and we met here for the first time.
Your tip:  

FA Pekelhaaring
Area: de Pijp, van Woustraat 127 – 129, 020-6790460, www.pekelhaaring.nl
Welcomes: locals from the neighbourhood. That’s a mix of students, visitors of the nearby market and people with informal business meetings.
Loves: to play games. You can find a lot of board games in this cafe.
PP-tip: order a sandwich if you’re hungry. They aren’t greedy with the ingredients.

Hotel de Goudfazant
Area: Amsterdam-Noord, Aambeeldstraat 10h, 020-6365170, www.hoteldegoudfazant.nl
Welcomes: everyone who loves to enjoy a night out without showing off (so you can easily wear jeans here).
Loves: cars. You can park for free and there’s an old Ferrari in this former garage.
PP-tip: take your foreign friends to this spot and they will credit you every birthday party: ‘you know, once we were in Amsterdam, we went to a deserted area of Amsterdam, and we thought, he doesn’t know the way, but then we came up at this restaurant and we were all like, wow!’

DRINK

Bo Cinq
Area: Center, Prinsengracht 494, 020-6220682, www.bo5.nl
Welcomes: the beautiful party peeps from Amsterdam.
Loves: to smoke. And therefor designed the most beautiful smoking lounge ever.
PP-tip: Go for the classic champagne cocktail if you want to celebrate the weekend.

Welcomes: tourists, hey we’re talking about the Damrak, but also trendsetters who love to get inspired by the fabulous collection.
Loves: to collect hard to get design items from all over the world. And wow, does the owner has a sense of taste!
PP-tip: this is the place to buy presents. For a friend, your baby or your home.
Your tip:  

Restored

Welcomes: young creatives.
Loves: to sell unique objects from young designers.
PP-tip: buy a beautiful piece of jewelry here. Like the feather ring for 17 euro.

Welcomes: everyone who loves to decorate his/her home on a frequent base.
Loves: to open their terrace in front of the store.
PP-tip: Don’t forget to visit their gallery downstairs.

Another Labels

Welcomes: mainly girls in this New York style (red bricks, concrete and some vintage items) shop.
Loves: to collect a beautiful collection of ‘have to have’s’.
PP-tip: It’s not that expensive, so you can give your credit card a go.
Your tip:  

Sukha 
Area: Haarlemmerbuurt, Haarlemmerstraat 110, 020-3304001, www.sukha-amsterdam.nl
Welcomes: you into a world of organic goodies. From interior items to clothes so soft as the skin of a peach.
Loves: to change the windows and turn it into a piece of art. Like the teepee recently.
PP-tip: Search for items of Ruby Tuesday. You will love it if you like soft, simplistic clothes.

Cotton Cake

Welcomes: you for a cup of coffee, a sandwich or a shopping session.
Loves: to sell work of young designers.
PP-tip: ask for coke and you get an organic version. Cool.

Welcomes: everyone. If you only have a few euro’s to spend or want to splurge for hundreds of euro’s.
Loves: to change the collection on a regular base. So pop in more than once.
PP-tip: Don’t miss the Haarlemmerstraat & Haarlemmerdijk because it’s a street full of cool concept stores – and Vinnies Deli for a lunch stop. Ideal.
