For me Australia is where it all started. At the age of 20 (12 years ago) I travelled to Australia as a backpacker. It was my first long journey and I arrived at a wet T-shirt contest on the first night. I thought: oh no, that’s not going to happen. I might not have a millionaires budget, but I’m gonna find the more special places down under. And that’s how I travelled for seven months through Australia, in search for cool spots. It may sound as a far-away destination but it definitely is an influencer in the world of hotspots. We’re now all doing the hanging plant thing, but have you seen The Commons in Sydney already? Open for years now (I wrote about it in 2010) and I’m sure they are already thinking about doing something else. Look at the coffee culture: Toby’s Estate opened their doors in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Parisian owner of Holybelly was a photographer when he arrived in Melbourne and got influenced by the coffee virus Down Under and he opened a cafe in Paris to bring a bit of Melbourne to France. And why is Federal Cafe in Barcelona such a success? Because the owners come from Australia and they decided to bring the open windows, coffee culture and delicious pies to Sant Antoni. That’s the reason I have to see Sydney (and after that Melbourne) and visit all those new spots that opened after my last visit and share my experiences with you! I hope you’re just as excited as I am.
12 years ago Cathay Pacific was the airline to bring me to Australia and now they are gonna bring me there again! Travelling in their brand new Premium Economy Class (follow me tomorrow on Twitter to read all about my experience) to Hong Kong first. That’s the perfect stop-over destination so I can visit Yardbird again and stay at the fantastic Hotel ICON and after that I’m off to Sydney to stay at the superb QT Sydney.

And after the winter in New York, I’m going to the white sandy beaches of Tulum. And in particular to Papaya Playa Project! A hotel I want to visit for ages already – since they opened as a pop up hotel by designhotels.com. And ofcourse I’m bringing my telephone – no we’re not going on a digital detox holiday – so be prepared for an overload of beach, sea and sun pictures. Just to boost your Vitamin D levels and to inspire you to go there yourself one day!

And ofcourse I love to hear about your recommendations. What can’t I miss in that area? Let me know!

Today is the day! I’m going to New York. And I can’t wait. Since my last visit there are so many new spots I want to visit so I can’t wait to see places like the Musket Room, the Butcher’s Daughter and Atrium in real life. When I was in NY in 2012 the Wythe Hotel just opened its doors and although I made a report, I didn’t sleep there. And that’s something I’m gonna do this time!

I’ve started the new year with Tried & Tested’s in Amsterdam (Hotel Dwars and Misc Store), Overveen (Pizza Revolution) Rotterdam (Nhow Hotel) and Nijmegen (de Meesterproef) and the next couple of days I will explore Madrid. The last time I was there was in 2012 and there are so many cool new addresses that I hope to inspire you with a new trip to the capital of Spain!

While I’m actually still dreaming of my night at concept store Merci in June, I will enter the Thalys tomorrow again in search for new addresses. So yes, the classic Pinterest quote ‘Paris is always a good idea’ works for this trip as well. There are already a number of things I’m looking forward to. To start with my stay at Hotel Paradis. A lovely hotel in Read more…

London, London, London. If you haven’t been there for a month, you already run hopelessly behind regarding the coolest spots in the city. My last visit dates back to December, so you can imagine how much I want to go! I’m looking forward to visit the first (yes, blame it on me but I assume that they are gonna open more of them in the future) Ace Hotel in Europe. I wonder if Hally’s is just as beautiful as these pictures show. And I’m already wondering how the bed in One Leicester Street feels like after a day of spotting. Next week you can expect the London Week on Petite Passport, but everyone who wants to come with me to London now, jump in my digital suitcase and travel with me via Instagram. Let’s Read more…

Tomorrow I will go to Valencia for the weekend. I’ve never been there and I can’t wait to see the works of Calatrava. I already got a shortlist of places I want to visit there, but I love to hear about your recommendations. Where do I have to go?

Tomorrow around this time I will be having lunch in my favorite city: Barcelona. I can’t wait to soak up the sun, visit all the cool new addresses (is it hard to get a reservation at Pakta?) and travel around in the area. I’m looking forward to go on a roadtrip to the Costa Brava and dive into the clear blue water (the photo above is taken there last year). I will be staying Read more…

Tomorrow around this time I’m flying with Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong. I have a lot of good memories of my first visit. When I was 20 I travelled to Australia for seven months and stopped in Hong Kong for two days. It was my first long-haul journey (happily also with Cathay Pacific) and I still see myself staring at all those huge skyscrapers and taking pictures of the view from The Peak. Although hotspotting was already visible during the trip (skipped the Lonely Planet hostels as soon as possible and tried to find beautiful places to stay on a budget) I’m now, eleven years later, going there especially to find the best addresses possible for you. So you can make the most out of your stopover destination or your city trip. Can’t wait to meet you there on my social media channels and can’t wait to see what Hong Kong has to offer!
I will share a lot on Twitter and Facebook, but if you really want to jump into my virtual suitcase I’ll invite you to join me via Instagram. See: www.instagram.com/petitepassport
