Most striking feature:

Villa Extramuros is a place you never want to leave. Period. The architecture is stunning (done by Jordi Fornells and Rolf Heinemann of Vora Arquitectura), the interior is very inspiring and the owners are really kind. Let me tell you about my experience. Villa Extramuros is reachable by car in about an hour from Lisbon. Via a small road you end up in the middle of nature where rabbits cross the road quickly while you drive your car to the parking. The white house is stunning and is build on a way that the light follows the architecture and that’s why the house changes every minute of the day. Sometimes you can sit in the sun, but you’ll always have a shade. And that’s a luxury because it can be quite hot in this region. The owners are from Paris, gave up everything in that busy city and arrived in the calmness of the Portuguese nature. They also live in the house and love to share their public spaces. Where you will find the most precious coffee table books (and magazines). Like ones of the work of Helmut Newton, Jeff Koons and Marc Newson. There’s also a swimming pool which looks out over the olive trees. The rooms are located on the first floor. And the room not only is a room with a bed, but you will also have a beautiful patio where you can sit down, read some books and stare out over the nature. At night you can see thousands of stars above you. In the bathroom they provide you with Aesop goodies and in the room the latest issues of Monocle and Vogue Paris are there for you to read. Then in the morning they serve you a delicious breakfast complete with fresh bread, home made pear and strawberry jam, yoghurt, cake, jus d’orange and tea. Villa Extramuros isn’t only a feast for the eye, but also the perfect place to unwind. Highly recommendable!

PS: tiny little fact. Cork comes from this region, so you will spot a lot of cork used in the interior. And the cork stool of Moooi by Jasper Morrison? You now know where the cork comes from.

My trip was sponsored by Transavia.

Transavia flies several times a week from Amsterdam Schiphol to Porto and Lisbon, check their website for the best tickets.
