José Avillez is one of the most popular chefs of Portugal. Like Frenchie in Paris has its own Rue de Nil, Albert Adria in Barcelona has its own El Barri d’Adria, José Avillez has its own Bairro do Avillez in Lisbon. All of his restaurants are located on walking distance of eachother, many of them in the same street. Like Cantinho do Avillez, Pizza Lisboa and Cafe Lisboa. For his work at Belcanto he received two Michelinstars.

His more recent opening is Bairro do Avillez in a former convent. A huge space with two different restaurants under one roof. When you enter you arrive in the Taberna where you can order small dishes to share for a really affordable price. We’ve started with a selection of meat and cheeses and a delicious Chá Açores No Chiado, a Gorreana black tea with cinnamon and orange (order it, you will love it too!). Then we had the tuna steak sandwich and the iberian pork steak (first one my favorite, but both very good). And the best thing was the dessert: the best pastel de nata with coffee ice-cream. If you only have time to eat one thing in Lisbon, let it be this!

There’s also a Merceria where you can buy food related souvenirs and Jose Avillez merchandise. And in the back you enter the more upscale restaurant called Páteo which is all about fish dishes. The interior is lovely and was inspired by the typical Portugese neighbourhoods. That’s why they rebuild typical houses in the interior. I also love the ship models (all facing to the kitchen – a detail telling us, the visitors, that the fish comes directly from the sea to their kitchen).
