Strong focus on cocktails
The Experimental Group knows cocktails. Founded exactly ten years ago in Paris the four men behind it turned their dreams into reality by opening bars in their hometown, London, New York and a super cool beach club in Ibiza. They wrote books about how to make the best cocktails at home. And two years ago they’ve opened their first hotel, The Grand Pigalle. With the idea of letting their guest feel like a true Parisian with a strong focus on the best cocktails. Available shaken for you in the bar, to be made by yourself from the mini-bar in your room or to be seen throughout the staircase as a print on the carpet.
In the middle of Covent Garden
Two years later they’ve opened their second hotel, Henrietta on Henrietta Street in Covent Garden. The location is absolutely A+. The street is not that busy – you’re surrounded by small shops and another French favorite called Frenchie – but a few steps to your right and you’ll be in the heart of Covent Garden. A good place to shop, dine and see street artists. Of course you’re also close to Soho and with the underground you’ll be at Victoria Station in a few stops.
Henrietta Hotel is a small hotel with only eighteen rooms designed by Dorothee Meilichzon. Who I personally adore because of the original bedheads she comes up with in every hotels she designs. Check out Hotel Paradis, Hotel Panache and of course the Grand Pigalle Hotel. She also works on the restaurants and bars of the Experimental Group and they all have a warm, intimate Parisian atmosphere. You’ll notice the attention to detail everywhere in the hotel. From the carpets on the grounds to the colors/wallpapers on the wall. The funny thing is that you feel like you’re in Paris once you’re inside the hotel. With the small corridors leading up to your room for example. But also because the staff speaks French and English.
I’ve stayed in the Grand Covent Garden Room which has a view of the London Eye. There are (cocktail) books in the room. The minibar is full of liquor so you can make your own cocktails. There are big bathrobes in the spacious bathroom (with two showers). And there’s that beautiful bedhead, a velvet chair and a small working table. Service is superb. I arrived before check-in time and they made sure the room was ready. Also when I wanted to go outside, they quickly rushed to me to hand me an umbrella in case it was going to rain (which it was and I was happy to have it with me).
Restaurant by Sylvian Roucayrol
Then the restaurant and bar. Of course sublime too. If you love cocktails you will be in for a treat and the same goes for dinner. Sylvian Roucayrol is head chef of the restaurant on the ground floor. Expect dishes inspired by southwest France, Corsica and the Basque Country. The interior is done by Meilichzon too and it’s a mix of colors, patterns and stunning three legged tables.
