We’re having a drink at the Athletic Club & Social in a beautiful Victorian building dating back to the beginning of the 20th century.

Inspired by the 20s and 30s

The most beautiful bar in Cape Town is undoubtedly the Athletic Club & Social. You’ll love the beautiful wallpaper – hand painted by David Brits, who also took care of the walls at Gorgeous George – the patterns on the benches, the marble on the tables and the colors on the wall. The work of designer Debra Parkington who was inspired by the 20s and 30s of the last century.

Black sport heroes

However, it’s not only about the aesthetics here. Owner Athos Euripidou wanted to create a members club where everyone is welcome. He looked at sports clubs from the last century that honored only white athletes and that had to change. He told me he went on a search for photos of black sports heroes of that time. People nobody ever talked about, but they existed. Athos found lots of images, and here – on the walls of the Athletic Club & Social – they get the attention they deserve.

Restaurant and balcony

Apart from the bar, there’s also a restaurant on the ground floor. You can order delicious fish and meat dishes – such as the chicken thighs with pita – and there are dishes to share. And on the second floor is a great balcony with a view over the neighborhood. An ideal place to start the evening!
